Brennans Caddy Report-Chrysler Championship

Thu, 26 Feb 2009 22:15:58

After a couple of weeks off it is nice to get back on the road and finish off the 2005 season.  It would be awesome if Mike had a very strong finish this week and qualified for the Tour Championship next week.

The last few weeks I've really enjoyed seeing some NHL hockey games in my time off.  The Dallas Stars were at home a few times last week and I will see the Lightning play in Tampa on Friday this week will be great.  There is no one more excited than I am that hockey is back.

The Chrysler Championship at the Innisbrook Resort in Tampa is one of my favorite tournaments we play all year.  One reason for this is that all the caddies go over to the Island course and play after we are done working.  It is also a very laid back atmosphere and most players stay on property within the gates of the Innisbrook Resort.

The course itself is the same as last year and is one of the few courses all year where there have been no changes from the previous year.  Innisbrook is a very straightforward course that really rewards the better ball strikers.

The greens here are the typical grainy, Florida Bermuda grasses.  For those who don't know the difference Bermuda grass grows in a certain direction and when putting down grain the putts are much faster than putting into the grain.  It is very important to know which way the grain goes all the time as it will affect the way the ball rolls.  The rough is quite thick this week and will be penalizing if players miss the fairway this week.

A few holes to note:

Number 8, a 232 yard-par 3 is one of the more difficult holes on the front nine. It is usually a three iron or sometimes a wood to a long skinny green, par is very good score. Number 13 is another par 3 that is over water and last year they added a new tee that makes the hole a bit tougher. The hole now plays 200 yards with water guarding the entire front and right of the green. This may be the best hole on the course.

Number 16 is in my opinion the toughest hole on the course. There is water down the right of the fairway which makes guys keep the ball out to the left. From the left side of the fairway it adds lots of yards to the hole and if you are in the rough it will be difficult to get to the green. Number 18 is a good finishing hole because the green is very difficult.  The second shot plays severely uphill and you have to be in the right spot on the green to have a chance at birdie.

Overall the course is very good and one I really like as it gives all types of players a chance to win.  I think when Vijay and Reteif are your last two champions it tells you the kind of course it is.

I'm looking forward to finishing this year off on a really positive note and what better way than a win!
