The Wyndham Championship

Thu, 19 Aug 2010 10:45:19

It’s sudden death time for us as we approach the playoffs. Sitting at 126 on the FedEx Cup list, we need a good week to get into that top 125. An exceptionally good week could move us into the top 100 which would keep us safe for a few more events. However, once you get into the playoff who knows what will happen. Just ask Heath Slocum. Last year he barely made it into the first event but managed to go on and almost win the FedEx Cup.

This week’s event, The Wyndham Championship, is held at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC. Wyndham just signed on to continue their sponsorship thru 2012 which is good news for the tour. This is not an event we usually play but it is a good one none the less. It’s a tough schedule as this event is right between the PGA Championship and the Barclays. With most of the top players in the world having played the past two weeks, and the next three weeks packed with important events, you won’t see a lot of big names. Never the less, there is always good support from local fans who I’m sure are appreciative to have the event.

The course at Sedgefield is a great old course. It’s not very long but it has a lot of holes that bend one way or the other and force you to shape the ball. The greens have a lot of undulation, mostly back to front so it is important to be below the hole. My only complaint is that they have bent grass greens here. These greens are very soft and slow. Because it is so hot here, they must water the bent grass a lot to prevent it from dying. Look for a lot of birdies here this week. Old traditional courses just don’t have Bermuda greens, even though they would make the course harder faster and that much better.

We’re staying in downtown Greensboro this week. Our hotel is right next to the Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball stadium which is home to a Single A club for the Florida Marlins. The venue is one of the best stadiums I’ve ever seen. I can see why it has been rated one of the best stadiums in minor league baseball.

I’m a little disappointed that there are no concerts this week in NC. I really enjoy seeing music on the road when possible.

Hoping we can get things turned around this week and get into the playoffs.
