2005 PGA Championship - Round 4

Fri, 27 Feb 2009 01:33:58

What a difference between Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, I thought I held my round together very well even though I wasn't at my best. On Sunday, it was the opposite; I really felt I could have been a couple under par, but I just didn't get the breaks that I needed.

On the first hole, I hit a good drive that just found a seam between the rough and first cut, making it tough to play. On the fourth hole, I was about a foot from hitting a perfect shot into the par three hole. The pin was down in a little hollow and I was trying to get the ball to hit the bank behind it and roll back to the hole, but it went up on top of the next level. From there, it was almost impossible to get the ball to stop near the hole as it picked up so much speed going back down that hill.

I did make a nice birdie on the 16th hole, the toughest on the course, which was good but I couldn't convert on either of the par 5s coming in. Overall, I'm pleased with where my game is heading right now. I'm finally healthy enough that I can work hard on my swing and fundamentals, and also get into the right positions with my setup. That gives me lots of confidence heading into an important closing stretch on my schedule.

At the end of September, of course, is the Presidents Cup. I'm excited to be on the team again and looking forward to talking with Gary Player about how the team will be coming together.  On Monday, I'll be in Montreal to help announce that the 2007 Presidents Cup will be at Royal Montreal Golf Club. I'm excited about that because I think it's an important event for Canada to host. It's a huge tournament and to welcome the world to Canada will be very special.

Of course the most important tournament of the year for me is the Bell Canadian Open and I hope to arrive in Vancouver after Labour Day with the same confidence I have now.

I'm a little disappointed of the scheduling problems that are causing a lot of players to take a pass on the tournament. I think the PGA Tour made a mistake in allowing the schedule to have the Open sandwiched between two East Coast stops. It's really disappointing.

I know I've been talking it up in the locker room as best I can and I'm hoping that in the next week or so that some of the veteran players will stand up and commit to playing. I know Shaughnessy, the course we're playing, will be one of the top courses we play all year. Regardless of the field, I think it will be a great tournament and there will be a lot of quality players there.

As always, thanks for your support.
