2007 US Open Round 2

That was the good stuff. On the down side, I wasn't driving it
as well as I would have liked and that led to a bit of trouble. But
when I put it all together and realize that I'm only six over, I'm
pleased.
I think the best part of today was to see some putts go in the
hole. My putter has been very cold all year but today, I felt like
I was rolling it really well. I had the speed down from all over
and didn't leave myself any really tough ones. Late in the day,
it's always difficult when the greens get bumpy and I did miss a
few because of that, but it was a good feeling.
It might seem funny to say I'm feeling good about being six over, but this is no ordinary golf tournament. It's extremely difficult out there at Oakmont. There have been some tough ones that we've played but when the wind is blowing like that and you're playing for such a big bounce and such a big roll on the greens to try and get it close, it's difficult. The margin for error is very small and if you hit it off line you're looking at some big numbers.
So I'm not surprised that there were only two under par rounds today. I was playing with David Toms and I thought he might get one as he had it going for a while. But it's just hard to go through 18 holes without missing a fairway or getting in a little bit of trouble. I think everyone's finding that out.
The course is also starting to get that U.S. Open feel to it.
The greens are starting to get that testy feel to them. With the
wind blowing as it has and the clear skies, the greens start to get
close to the edge. They're not there yet, but they're close. I'm
sure they're going to be there by Sunday.
For the weekend, I'm hoping to figure out my driver, which has been
one of my strong points this year. If that doesn't work, I'll
probably just hit a lot more Rescue clubs and three-woods. I did
that today a few times such as on 15 where I elected to go with a
Rescue club instead of driver. There were also probably a few more
three-woods than on Thursday But I tried to bust it one more time
on 18 and it didn't work out as I hit it in the rough and that led
to a bogey. That's a hole that sets up perfectly for me and I
should be able to hit that shot easily, but I didn't on
Friday.
One drive that did turn out well was on long par-5 12th which is
667 yards. I killed a drive and only had 290 left to the hole. I
was thinking of going for it but the wind started to gust back into
me so I knew the smart play was to lay up.
Those are the kind of decisions you have to make out here to avoid
disasters while still giving you a chance to score. I'm hoping to
do that and add in an improved driver for the weekend.
As always, thanks for your support.
Mike
