2007 Canadian Open - Round 4

Fri, 27 Feb 2009 01:30:46

Today wasn't what I expected for the final round of the Canadian Open.

I thought I was going to have another good day and post another low score. I had a good warm up and was hitting it well on the range. And when I stepped on to the first tee, I started off by hitting good shots right out of the gate. I continued to hit good shots, but I didn't get any results. No one was more surprised than me to be two over through four holes because I was really hitting it well.

The two bogeys I made on three and four I thought I'd hit good shots. I hit a real nice wedge into three and I thought the wind was into me but it ended up being downwind. On the fourth, I hit a five iron that I thought was perfect, but it ran through the green. I was surprised that it didn't stick as most of the shots had been doing this week.

The rest of the round I only managed to make two birdies. I wasn't able to get anything going or generate any momentum. If I was between clubs, I seemed to always pick the wrong club. When I thought the wind was blowing one way, it would be the opposite direction. It was just one of those days.

Still, I'll leave Angus Glen with a good feeling. My game came around at the end of the week and I'm feeling better about it now than when I arrived. I think I could have made a few more birdies, but then as golfers, we always have that feeling.

This was a much different year for the Canadian Open. We had a new date and I think the RCGA did a good job in getting a solid field for the tournament. I also think Angus Glen stood up as a good test for the national championship and all in all, it was a good week.

I hope that everyone involved can continue to build the momentum I sensed this week to try to make this tournament one of the elite events again. I hope the RCGA will try to take advantage of some of the great old courses we have in this country. That's something I know that so many of the players on the PGA Tour would love. It's really become one of the most important factors in deciding what tournaments we play.

If we were able to play on courses such as Hamilton and Shaughnessy more often, I know the fields would improve. We don't get to play enough of those courses these days, the ones where there's more to scoring than just bombing it way out there. A course like Hamilton, the driver has to stay in the bag a little bit and you have to maneuver it around a little bit more and the greens might have a little more subtlety.

I know there is talk of setting up a rotation of courses like that and that would be great. There's also talk that more corporations might be coming on board for next year and that, too, would be welcome as I know how the financial success of the Open helps out many other programs the RCGA runs.

Right after I finished at the Open, I left for Prince Edward Island where I'll play in the Making the Connection event at Crowbush Cove and then I'm off to the World Golf Championships in Akron, Ohio. That will be followed by the PGA Championship.

It's a busy time, but I'm excited to keep playing.

Finally, I want to thank all the fans who showed their support all week long at Angus Glen to me and all the Canadians. It was a fantastic week, as the Canadian Open always is.

Thanks again,

Mike
