Mikes Blog - Round 4 - 2008 US Open

Today was a bit of a frustrating day for me at the U.S. Open. I really felt good about the way I hit the ball, but I simply couldn't buy a putt. I knew going out that I needed to post a very good score to have a chance to win and that was my goal. But with these greens, it was difficult all week.
The greens were bumpy with the poa annua grass here. Add to that lots of traffic from players walking around and getting the ball into the hole was tough all week, and especially so on Sunday. I think I had five or six putts that when they were two feet from the hole, I thought would be in, but they bumped off line.
On the 14th hole, for example, I couldn't believe that the putt I hit didn't go in. It was just dead into the hole and turned off line just before the cup. It's frustrating to watch what you think are good putts stay out of the hole, but that's the nature of the U.S. Open.
You know that coming in it can happen and you understand it on every hole. It's one of the reasons why patience is key here because it's very easy to get frustrated.
I leave Torrey Pines feeling really good about my game. I feel that I'm playing well and I'm sure that when I get back onto some smoother greens, my game will respond.
Overall, I'd have to say I'm disappointed with the results. I had a chance to win on Sunday so that's good, but to play like I did and get not very much out of it was tough.
For the moment, I'm looking forward to two days of fun at the Telus Skins Game in Vernon, B.C. I haven't played in this event for a few years and I know it's a lot of fun. Playing with Greg and Freddie, as well as Colin and Camilo will be great. I hope you'll tune in to watch.
As always, thanks for your support.
