Not much on the agenda this week - other than celebrity gawking and slow play at the Monterey Peninsula. The Euro Tour is off to India in a co-sponsored event with the Asian Tour - and the national hero Jeev (#59) is the top ranked player in the field - so the Euro/AT combo minimum of 20 OWGR points for the winner should apply. The Nationwide Tour is done with the down under swing and getting ready for the Latin American swing in 3 weeks. The LPGA is getting ready for season start in the far east in two weeks, the Euro ladies start down under in 3 weeks - the Japan Tour is still months away from their start.
So we get to focus all our attention on the sea lions down on the rocks below that grassy stretch called the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Of course, we may get a little distracted while we try to figure out if Mike just had a bad day on Friday, or if his game is totally off the rails - we get to swear at the lack of pbp on the other two golf courses - lots of time for umpteen FU's at CDW as play progresses at a snail's pace with all the hackers tagging along - add in umpteen FU's at TGC for paying too much attention to the hackers - and we get to pursue the sup-plots as we wonder if DeLaet can get back on track and land a top 10, and more importantly for Baryla - can he make his first cut of the season....
Now, as far as the side issue of professional golf and the OWGR goes - the field is actually quite strong this year as a few more ranked players show up to get a peak ahead of the US Open this summer, and some international players get a warm-up ahead of next week's match play..... I'm a little surprised that Ikeda is not in the field - but he may be up in Tucson practicing for his first US start. Headliners include Mickelson (no longer #2), Furyk, Harrington, Garcia, O'Hair, Goosen, Donald, Vijay (no longer in top 30), Mahan, Watney, Ishikawa, Clark, Mike, Kuchar, Scott and Dustin. This all adds up to the strongest field in several years - 48 OWGR points for the winner, and top 50 required for points.
