Leggatt turned pro in 1990 and joined the Buy.com Tour in 2000; finishing 5th on the money list including six top-10 finishes. In 2001 he qualified for the PGA Tour and had three top-10 finishes, including a 5th place finish at the John Deere Classic, and earned $368, 862; good enough for 133rd on the PGA money list, narrowly missing the cut for the 2002 PGA season. Fortunately, at the 2001 Q-school Leggatt finished in 5th place and qualified for the 2002 PGA Tour with exempt status, solidifying his place as one of Canada's top golfers. Ian was also a Provincial and national speed skating champion in Canada.
