Brief Biography Jon Mills

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:36:51

"After a superb college career, Jon Mills of Brooklin, Ontario, has been playing as a pro for nearly a year and the transition has been as smooth as his swing. After a college career filled with awards, recognition, and accolades, the 24 year-old Mills turned pro after graduating from Kent State University in May of 2001.

In his final year at Kent State, Mills finished the year ranked 12th on the Sagarin Collegiate Golf Rankings (higher than any other Canadian before him, yes, Mike included), and was selected as a Division 1, 1st Team All-American. He was also named Kent State's Male Athlete of the Year, the Mid-American Conference Sportsman of the Year, and the Mid American Golfer of the Year. He won two NCAA tournaments in his final year, including the 2000 NCAA Division 1, Central Region Championship. Not a bad way to finish off a college career.

Since turning pro, Mills has competed at the PGA's Bell Canadian Open and the Air Canada Championship. At last year's PGA Tour Qualifying School, Mills made it to the final stage and earned conditional Buy.com status for 2002.

"While his golf is obviously important and is behind a lot of what he has achieved, he is an individual who has his head on straight and doesn't lose sight of his roots and those who have helped him," says his father Dave, Executive Director of the Golf Association of Ontario. "While Judy (Jon's mother) and I obviously want him to succeed at the highest level of golf, it is also important that he succeed in life and giving back to the game and those who have helped him. We are confident that he will.""

Currently Mills is splitting his time between the Buy.com Tour and the Canadian Tour, where he finished 9th at the Texas Challenge earlier this year. Canada's current PGA star, Mike Weir, has taken Mills under his wing and is teaching him how to handle the pressure of professional golf as well as being one of Canada's brightest stars. With his solid background and the tremendous support around him, Mills will surely represent his country well. His parents have little to worry about.
