Australian Michael Curtain tied for lead in Second Round of CanTour Q School

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 00:18:00

KAMLOOPS, BC-Michael Curtain of Australia shot his second straight round under par Tuesday to grab a share of the lead after the second round of the
Canadian Tour's Spring Qualifying School. The 23-year-old carded a 1-under 71 for a 36-hole total of 3-under 141 and is tied with Bryan Omelia (Van Nuys, CA) for top spot. Three others are at even-par 144.

For the second consecutive day, showers and cool temperatures enveloped The Dunes, and swirling winds added another dimension to the 7120-yard layout.

Curtain senses his game still isn't where it should be, but has put himself in ideal position heading into Wednesday's third round of the 90-hole tournament. "The game still doesn't feel sharp, but I seem to be making my way around the course," said Curtain, who also holds status on the Asian Davidoff Tour. "I've done well in this weather, and looking at the scores, I seem to be in good shape. I won't change my game plan- I want to win this tournament, but I am shooting for at least the top five."

Spring Qualifying School is a comeback of sorts for Curtain. Frustrated with his game and with the self-described "politics" of the sport, Curtain took two years off and sold cards in his native Australia. In November of 2000, he began working on his game again and turned pro in January of this year. Once play wraps up Friday, Curtain hopes to book a flight to Michigan for next week's Bay Mills Open as a full-fledged Canadian Tour member.

"I'm just going to go out and play smart and try to be sensible. This is the type of course where you have to pick you spots to attack. With any luck, I can hole a few putts and get on a roll."

The starting field of 70 will be reduced to the low 60 scores plus ties after Thursday's fourth round. Those remaining will play Friday for one of 15 exempt and 10 non-exempt cards to be awarded.

Omelia, 27, a former Ireland and Great Britain national team member, echoed Curtain's thoughts and will not get too far ahead of himself with 54 holes still to play.
"I am pleased to be where I am, but I am literally going to take it one step at a time," said Omelia. I'll hit my shots and see what happens. I'd be delighted with top spot, but my goal coming in here was to qualify for the Canadian Tour. I've put myself in position to do that."
