BC Native Greg McAuley Wins Future Links Prairie Championship

"Hecla Island, MB - Greg McAuley spent his first two rounds clinging to a fragile lead. The 18-year-old lefty striker of Surrey, BC struggled on the back nine of Sunday's final round, but held on to win his first Bank of Montreal Future Links Prairie Championship.

McAuley entered the final round just one shot ahead of local favourite Michael Keast. He held a comfortable lead at times before double bogeying the 15th hole, and opening the door for Keast. But then an errant tee shot by Keast on the last hole allowed McAuley to come out on top. He shot a final round 74, and a tournament total 215. Keast finished with 216. McAuley expressed both relief and excitement at his win.

"I'm so glad it's over. That game completely drained me. I made a couple of birdies on the first nine holes, but I didn't play well on the four-hole stretch from 13 to 16. I had some bad breaks and fell behind [Keast]."

Whitney Townsend of Calgary, AB took home the trophy for the girls division. The 18-year-old shot a final day 79 to give her a tournament total of 238. That was just enough to edge Kim Valleau of Nipawin, SK, who scored 239.

"It was such a close game. Kim and I were even for a long time - playing shot for shot. It could have gone either way. But my putts were dropping really good in the end and I was able to come out on top."

Playing in his first Future Links tournament, Joey McInnes of Red Deer, ON played a conservative game en route to claiming the bantam division title. He finished with a tournament score of 244, a convincing six strokes ahead of Burke Nagle.

During the first round of the Western Canadian Juvenile Team Championship, British Columbia's provincial team took an impressive lead and never looked back. At the end of the championship, BC finished with a total of 672 - 21 shots ahead of Alberta.
