Canadian Tours Bay Mills Open Preview

After a one-week hiatus to allow for Spring Qualifying School in B.C., the schedule resumes with the Tour's ninth official event of the year. Chris Wisler of Dover, DE, who is coming off his first professional triumph at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Championship two weeks ago, will not be in the starting field this week. With money leaders Hank Kuehne (Palm Beach, FL) and Steve Scott (Wellington, FL) also taking the week off, Jeff Quinney (Scottsdale, AZ) will look to improve on his third-place standing on the Tour's Order of Merit. Derek Gillespie of Oshawa, ON sits in fourth spot on the money list with $44,066 (CDN) and will be in search of his second win of the year when opening round action gets underway Thursday at the 7056-yard, par-72 Wild Bluff Golf Club.
Among those gaining exemptions into the Bay Mills Open are former N.H.L. stars Dino Ciccarelli and Grant Fuhr. Bryan Omelia of Ireland, who was the medallist at Spring Q-School last week, will also make his Canadian Tour debut.
The 2002 U.S. swing featured seven different winners-Scott (Texas Classic), Kuehne (Texas Challenge), Quinney (Scottsdale Swing at McCormick Ranch), Jimmy Walker (Scottsdale Swing at Eagle Mountain), Rob McMillan (Barefoot Classic), Gillespie (Myrtle Beach Barefoot Championship) and Wisler. Pablo del Olmo of Mexico captured the Michelin Ixtapa Classic in April.
Following this event, the Tour moves north of the border for the summer, beginning with the Ontario Open Heritage Classic in Huntsville, ON from June 13-16. The Canadian leg of the schedule will also showcase stops in Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal and Toronto.
