Mario Tiziani Holds Lead at CanTours Bay Mills Open

Despite gusting winds swirling throughout the 7056 yard, par-72 Wild Bluff Golf Club, the 31-year-old carded a 1-under 71 for a 36-hole total of 7-under 137 and a one-stroke cushion on Roger Harrison (Calgary, AB) and Conrad Ray (Hilton Head, SC). Tiziani and Ray, who were still on the course when opening round play was suspended due to darkness Thursday night, each put the finishing touches on a 6-under 66 Friday morning before turning around and teeing it up in the second round.
Rob Johnson (Terre Haute, IN) is at 5-under 139, while Kent Fukushima (Grande Prairie, AB) and Rich Massey (Greenville, SC) are three shots back of the leader.
Tiziani, the brother-in-law of two-time Canadian Tour winner and current PGA Tour star Steve Stricker, admittedly struggled in the wind Friday, but did enough to stay one step in front of Harrison and Ray.
"It was smoke and mirrors out there, I didn't hit the ball that great but I made some putts," conceded Tiziani. "The wind was tough today, and I was tired. I just tried to keep the ball in front of me and minimize my mistakes. The key in the wind is to hit it solid, and I didn't do that as well as I would have liked."
This season is showing signs of being the most productive of Tiziani's four years on the Canadian Tour. Aside from four top-15 results, he also won his first pro title in January at the Panasonic Panama Open, an unofficial Tour event. This weekend, he hopes to take home the $24,000 (CDN) winner's cheque in the ninth official event of the campaign.
"To be honest, I thought the scores would be a lot lower, but this course held its own today. I won early this year, and have been able to play well most of the way. I'll go out this weekend and see if I can get an official win here."
Former N.H.L star goaltender Grant Fuhr, who received an exemption into the Bay Mills Open, missed the cut with a two-day total of 8-over 152. Fuhr shot a 5-over 77 Friday.
