Pemberton to Meet Cowan in Final of Ontario Match Play Championship

"Brad Pemberton of Port Hope has reached the final of the Ontario Match Play Championship in consecutive years trying to become only the second two-time winner of this prestigious event. Pemberton, 21, needed an extra hole to defeat Tom Schupp of Oakville in the quarterfinals and then outduelled 19 year-old Andrew Parr of London in the semifinals 4&2.

Pemberton, who attends Eastern Michigan University, faces 37 year-old match play specialist Rob Cowan in tomorrow's 36-hole final; they tee-off at 8am at the Rocky Crest Resort situated on the shores of Lake Joseph.

Cowan, a native of Waterloo defeated Bradley Moulton of Orangeville in the semifinals and then outpaced Charlie Woo of Markham 2&1 to secure a spot in the final.

Parr, who will be attending Texas A&M in the fall, reached the semifinals by way of a 3&2 decision over Nicholas Kenney of Toronto. Woo, meanwhile made short work of Michael Moreland in their quarterfinal match - defeating the Orangeville teen 5&4 before succumbing to Cowan in the semis.

Pemberton is vying for his third provincial championship. As well as capturing last years Match Play event the Dalewood Golf & Curling Club member can also lay claim to the 1998 Ontario Junior Championship.

Although Rob Cowan has yet to win a Provincial title, the Westmount Golf & Country Club member has certainly seen his share of hardware; father Gary has two U.S. Amateurs, one Canadian Amateur and nine Ontario Amateur victories.
