Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:38:24

"The Canadian PGA is pleased to announce that US Amateur Champion Bubba Dickerson has been awarded an exemption to play in the Samsung Canadian PGA Championship June 6 - 9 at the DiamondBack Golf Club in Richmond Hill, Ontario. The Championship is being played on the BUY.COM TOUR for the second consecutive year.

""I am excited about competing in the Samsung Canadian PGA Championship this year,"" said Dickerson. ""This tournament has a lot of history, and I am thankful for the opportunity to play with this years' impressive field of players"".

It's been an eventful time for the 21-year-old from Hilliard, Florida. Since capturing the US Amateur crown last August, Dickerson left school, married his high school sweetheart, made the cut at the Bay Hill Invitational and played with Tiger Woods at the Masters. Two weeks later, Dickerson bid farewell to amateur golf and turned pro at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic.

Dickerson can play in up to 7 PGA TOUR events on sponsor exemptions this year as he attempts to secure a TOUR card for 2003. Although never a winner on the US College circuit, he posted six runner-up finishes and is one of only two people since World War II to win both the Western Amateur and US Amateur in the same season. The other person is Tiger Woods.

Dickerson will be part of a stellar field at the Samsung Canadian PGA Championship that includes 12 former PGA TOUR winners. All four rounds of the Championship will be broadcast live on the The Golf Channel

Richard Zokol, of Richmond, B.C. won the 2001 Samsung Canadian PGA Championship at DiamondBack Golf Club. The victory helped him finish 13th on the 2001 BUY.COM TOUR Money List and regain his PGA TOUR card for 2002. The top 15 players on the BUY.COM TOUR's money list at the end of the season are exempt onto the PGA TOUR the following year.

First staged in 1912, the Canadian PGA Championship is the second oldest professional golf championship in Canada and boasts a legacy of legendary champions like Arnold Palmer, George Knudson, Lee Trevino, Al Balding and Raymond Floyd. The Canadian Open is the oldest professional golf championship in Canada, first staged in 1904.

Total purse for the 2002 Samsung Canadian PGA Championship is $450,000US with $81,000US to the winner.
