Craig Doell Takes Round Two at Canadian Club Championship

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 00:17:51

Whistler, BC - Defending champion Craig Doell is looking to continue his reign as the king of the Canadian Club Champions Championship. The Victoria native carded a round-two one-under par for a two-day total of 68-70-138. That was enough to put him in the lead after round two, and advance him one day closer to his third consecutive Club Champions title.

Doell has been club champion at his home course, Victoria Golf Club, for the last five years. Earlier this season, he also won the 2002 Individual Championship category of the Peru International Team Championship.

An intense sun made today's play challenging. Doell struggled on the first few holes; but despite fast greens caused by the heat, Doell shot a flawless back nine.

"Today was a scorcher. The greens were really baked out, which made it nearly impossible to stop the ball. I had a bad first five, ending up in the rough on the first hole, and hitting the cart path on the fourth - bogeying them both. But I hit every green on the back, and my putting was solid."

Doell's play strategy for this tournament remains simple, "keep the ball in play off the tee, and leave it below the hole." He'll try and stay consistent with his game plan heading into tomorrow's third round.

Yesterday's leader Travis Inlow of Calgary, AB trails by one after round two for a total of 66-73-139. He and Brad Pemberton of Port Hope, ON are tied for second. Pemberton shot a 69-70-139. Michael Mannion of Gibsons, BC, and Merv Dusyk of Red Deer, AB are in third with 141.
