Doell and Pemberton Share the Lead at Canadian Club Championship

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 00:17:47

Whistler, BC - The race is on for the Canadian Club Champions Championship at Whistler Golf Club and defending champion Craig Doell of Victoria, BC and Brad Pemberton of Port Hope, ON are battling it out for the lead.

Despite carding an even par 71, Doell described today's round as "average." He had a couple of bad breaks. A short but fierce downpour in the early afternoon made it difficult for Doell to maintain a grip on his club.

"I got into trouble on the third tee. My hand slipped on the club and my ball veered right, hit a tree, and deflected into the rough - almost into the long rough. I saved par, but I could have done better."

Doell also ran into trouble on the 18th. He hooked his tee shot well right of the fairway and this time his ball rolled into the long rough, and came to rest up against a tree. Doell, who plays left handed, was forced to flip his wedge upside down and chip out right handed.

Pemberton knows he can improve his game tomorrow. He plans to make more putts during tomorrow's final round. "If I putt like I usually do then I should be a lot lower. My short game is usually stronger. Today I missed a few putts under 12 feet. You just can't do that against Craig [Doell]. "

Garth Collings of Winnipeg, MB is in second with a three-round total of 211, after firing a smooth 69 today. J.C. Deacon of Unionville, ON and current sophmore at UNLV in the U.S., stands confident and ready to make a run only three strokes back.

Honorable mention must also be given to 15-year-old Mark Pothier of Clare Golf & Country Club, who, as reigning Nova Scotia Midget Champion, made the cut in his first - but certainly not the last - national championship. His 233 total puts him tied for 63rd.

The field at the 2002 Canadian Club Champions Championship has now been cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties to finish Friday's final round. The Club Champions Championship is open to current designated club champions from member clubs of the RCGA, who are male amateur golfers. Only one entry per member club is accepted.

The RCGA, the governing body of men's amateur golf in Canada, determines national policies and standards relating to the game on behalf of more than 300,000 of its members. In addition to conducting Canada's six national amateur championships, the RCGA also conducts three professional tournaments: the Bell Canadian Open, The AT&T Canada Senior Open and the Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Open.
