Bourgeois Makes History at Avondale Golf Course

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:41:29

"Vernon River, PE - Marc Bourgeois of Dieppe, NB broke both the course record and tournament record at Avondale Golf Course during the opening round of the Bank of Montreal Future Links Atlantic Championship. Bourgeois fired a 6-under 66 to take a seven-stroke lead after round one.

The previous course record, set by Avondale Golf Course's teaching professional David Bowlan in June of this year, was a 67. Four professionals competing in the 2002 Maritime Masters Championship in June carded the low tournament score of 70. Bourgeois, just 16 years old, out shot them all. Although he's thrilled with his round, Bourgeois said he could have done better.

"I was a bit disappointed after the front nine. After hitting a great tee shot on the 4th hole, and chipping to two feet, I missed the putt for par. Two holes later I messed up again. I hit a perfect tee shot to the middle of the fairway, and was on [the green] in two, but I three putted and made bogey," said Bourgeois.

But he more than made up for it after the turn. Bourgeois made six birdies and three pars for a 6-under par on the back nine. It was just what he needed to take a convincing lead after this opening round. Still, Bourgeois isn't without competition.

Leading the charge against Bourgeois are New Brunswick teammates Michel Landry of Tracadie, NB and Sean Losier of Miramichi, NB. Both carded a 1-over 73 to share the second spot after the first round. The boys are always in competition, and it's usually tight.

Bourgeois beat out Landry, Losier, as well as Brodie Flanders of Fawcett Hill, NB (who shares third with Ryan Vassel of Toronto, ON) in the New Brunswick Junior Championship earlier this month. Flanders, Landry, and Losier finished second, third, and fourth respectively. Landry, who won the New Brunswick Amateur two weeks ago, said competition between the foursome is always neck-in-neck.

"We always play together in tournaments because we always seem to shoot similar scores. In the end it just comes down to who wants it the most. Marc [Bourgeois] wanted the Junior. I wanted the Amateur, and I want to win this week," said Landry about the Bank of Montreal Future Links Atlantic Championship title.

Flanders, who will play golf for the University of Oklahoma in the fall, refuses to give up on his long-awaited chance at a championship win. "I'm tired of always finishing second. I was second at the New Brunswick Junior. I was second at the Amateur. I'm ready to win one," said the 18-year-old.

In the girls division, Michelle Williams of Wolfville, NS took a 4-stroke lead after round one. Laura Harris of New Minas, NS shot an 81. Bank of Montreal Future Links Quebec Champion Isabelle Gendreau of St-Georges de Beauce, QC is in third with 83. Defending champion - girls division, Lindsey Edmunds of London, ON shot an 84.

Vincent Adams of Boisbriand, QC leads the bantam division with a first-round 77. Current Bank of Montreal Future Links Quebec bantam champion, Julien Proulx of Cap-Rouge, QC trails by six. Jonathan Read of Sackville, NB is in third with an 87.

Operating in conjunction with the Bank of Montreal Atlantic Championship is the Atlantic Junior Championship. At the end of the first round, New Brunswick's provincial team holds a commanding 9-stroke lead over Team Nova Scotia. Prince Edward Island's team is 15 strokes back of Nova Scotia's team.

Team New Brunswick's best scores hold the top four spots after round one of the championship. Bourgeois, Landry, Losier, and Flanders also make up the provincial team heading to the 64th Canadian Junior in Saskatoon next week.
