Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:41:11

"LPGA players Beth Bader, Gail Graham, Giulia Sergas, Hilary Homeyer and Fiona Pike qualified for the Weetabix Women's British Open through the U.S.-based qualifier for the major championship held as part of the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. The Weetabix Women's British Open is the fourth and final major of the LPGA Tour's 2002 season.

The top five scores from the 25 eligible players at the conclusion of the first 36 holes of play at the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic determined the players who earned spots in the Weetabix Women's British Open, Aug. 8-11, at Turnberry Golf Club in Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland. Bader shot rounds of 64-71=135 (-9) to qualify, while Graham (71-68=139, -5), Sergas (71-68=139, -5), Homeyer (70-71=141, -3) and Pike (70-71=141, -3) also qualified after 36 holes.

To be eligible for the qualifier, LPGA players must not only have previously entered the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic and designated their desire to participate in the qualifier, but they must also have already entered the Weetabix Women's British Open by the July 9 deadline.

This is the second-straight year the LPGA has had a U.S.-based qualifier for the Weetabix Women's British Open, which has been a part of the LPGA's schedule since 1994. The tournament was designated as the LPGA's fourth major in September 2000. The field for the 72-hole, $1.5 million event will be finalized after an on-site qualifier on Monday, Aug. 5.
