Dave Markle Fires Tournament Record to Win Future Links Ontario Championship

Markle finished seven under for the championship - a Willow Valley tournament record - to claim the Bank of Montreal Future Links Ontario Championship at Willow Valley Golf Course in Mount Hope, ON. It was his first big win.
"I've won regional championships before, but nothing like this," said Markle. "I'm really excited. This win gives me a lot of confidence heading into the Junior Match Play Championship in Kitchener next week and into the Canadian Junior in Saskatoon next month."
Perhaps the most exciting round of the tournament came from local favourite Cory Thistlethwaite of Dundas, ON. Thistlethwaite was 10th at the start of the day; he finished the tournament in second. He birdied half of the holes at Willow Valley Golf Course - six of them on the front nine. Thistlethwaite shares second place with Matthew Johnston of Winnipeg, MB.
It was a tight battle for the girls title, and it took two sudden death playoff holes, but Patti Hogeboom of Glenburnie, ON came out on top. Hogeboom and Megan Chapman of Collingwood, ON were neck in neck for the entire round. Hogeboom started the round with a one-stroke lead; at the turn Chapman was up by one. Two holes later, Hogeboom trailed by three.
Hogeboom recovered, but Chapman birdied the 17th hole and Hogeboom was one stroke back heading into number 18. Chapman bogeyed the final hole - her five-foot putt stopped just short of the hole. Hogeboom made par and the girls headed to the 10th hole for a playoff.
Both girls made par on the first playoff hole; Chapman bogeyed the second hole - a 105-yard par three. "Megan [Chapman] hit close to the hole - much closer than I did. But she went after it, and her downhill putt rolled four feet past the hole. She three putted; I landed it in two, made par and won the match," said Hogeboom.
This wasn't the first time Hogeboom has won a sudden death playoff. Last week she won a spot on the Ontario Junior Team by winning a sudden death playoff on the second hole.
Cody Pickard of Thornhill, ON took the lead at the Bank of Montreal Future Links Ontario Championship on the first day of play, and never looked back. Pickard shot a tournament 235 to win by a convincing 15 strokes. Ryan Sevigny of Stittsville, ON place second with a 250, and Nick Halliday of Caledonia, ON shot a 258 to take third.
