Don Bryson Aces Hole No 8 in Future Links Ontario Championship

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:41:13

"Mount Hope, ON - For the second time since the Bank of Montreal Future Links Junior Series began in 2000, a player shot a hole in one - and he did it with his sand wedge.

The golf gods were smiling as Don Bryson of Brantford, ON aced the 8th hole, a 112-yard par three, at Willow Valley Golf Course. "My tee shot actually landed twelve feet back of the hole, but it spun backwards and managed to find the hole. I was ecstatic; it was hard to believe," said Bryson.

Bryson's hole in one wasn't enough to put him in the lead, but he wasn't far off. He shot a one-over 73 in the first round of the Bank of Montreal Future Links Ontario Championship at Willow Valley Golf Course in Mount Hope, ON. Bryson sits three strokes behind first-round leaders Kyler Murphy of Thunder Bay, ON and Dave Markle of Shelburne, ON.

Markle is pleased with his opening-round 70 because it puts him in a good position for the next two rounds. His strategy heading into tomorrow is not to surrender his lead by taking unnecessary risks.

"I always weigh the risk and reward factor of a shot. If I know I can make a green, I'll go for it, but if I think it's too much of a risk, I'll hold off. That's what I did today. That's what I'll do tomorrow. I didn't want to play myself out of the tournament on the first day. It's tough to hold on to a lead, but it's even harder to come back from a bad first round," said Markle.

Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, ON and Stacey Bieber of Winnipeg, MB lead the girls division after round one of the Bank of Montreal Future Links Ontario Championship. Both girls shot a 79. Megan Chapman of Collingwood, ON trails by one.

Cody Pickard of Thornhill, ON shot an opening-round 82 to top the bantam division. Ryan Sevigny of Stittsville, ON is in second with an 85, and Nick Halliday of Caledonia, ON is seven strokes behind Sevigny.
