Hometown Favorite Liz Earley Wins Canadian Womens PGA

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:40:48

"St. Catharines, ON Home course advantage paid big dividends for Liz Earley Wednesday as she edged defending champion Lorie Kane of Charlottetown, PEI by a single shot to win the Whirlpool Canadian PGA Women's presented by Aquafina at the St. Catharines Golf & Country Club. The championship is the third of four events on the 2002 Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Tour.

Earley carded back-to-back rounds of 2-under par 70 at the 6,188 yard layout to finish at 4-under par and take home top prize of $13,000 and a full set of premium Whirlpool appliances.

The championship nearly went to a playoff. Holding a two-shot lead on the final hole, Earley got into trouble but bailed herself out with a ten foot putt for bogey that sealed the victory and avoided a playoff with Kane, winner of this championship five of the last six years.

""I've had that putt a million times,"" said Earley, a member at the Club for the past 23 years. ""I was really confident about making it. I wasn't nervous ""

A former LPGA TOUR player, Earley is currently playing the Futures Tour but is hoping to return to the LPGA by finishing in the top three on the Futures Tour Money List at the end of the season. The win also provides an exemption into the Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Open but Earley says she may have to decline in order to guarantee a high finish on the Futures Tour.

""This is her home course,"" said Kane, who fired rounds of 71-70. ""She definitely had an advantage reading the greens. I wanted this. I don't like to come back and play in any tournament that I've defended and not win again. It's nice for her though and it's good for the tournament.""

The only other player to break par in the 36-hole championship was Terrill Samuel, an amateur from Toronto who finished alone in third place at one-under par with rounds of 71-72.

There was a four-way tie for fourth place with Chris Greatrex of Vancouver, BC, Isabelle Beisiegel of St Hilaire, Quebec, Carrie Vaughan of Rothesay, New Brunswick and amateur Jan Dowling of Bradford, Ontario all finishing at even par.

2002 marks the 6th consecutive year with Whirlpool Canada as title sponsor of the Championship. The 16th annual competition features the top Canadians on the professional golf tours, female club professionals from across the country and a select group of amateurs.

Total purse for the Whirlpool Canadian PGA Women's Championship is $65,000 with $13,000 and a complete set of premium Whirlpool appliances awarded to the champion.
