Markle Takes a Five Stroke Lead into Final Round of Future Links Ontario Championship

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:41:15

"Mount Hope, ON - At the start of yesterday's round, Dave Markle's goal was to not play his way out of contention. Today, he took the lead. Tomorrow, he'll go for the win.

Dave Markle of Shelburne, ON fired a second-round 68 to give him a five-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Bank of Montreal Future Links Ontario Championship at Willow Valley Golf Course in Mount Hope, ON.

Playing in his first Future Links Junior Series event, Markle carded an eagle and three birdies during today's round. He shot the low round of the day, and the low round of the tournament. However, Markle says he can go even lower.

"I played well today, but I could have made a few more putts," said Markle. "That eagle on the par five really got me going. If I can keep hitting good shots like that and land some more putts tomorrow, I'm going to be tough to beat."

Kyler Murphy of Thunder Bay, ON will try to come back and defeat Markle in the final round, but he'll have his work cut out for him. Murphy, who shared the lead with Markle after the first round, said he was playing great for most of his round.

"I was two under with three holes to play. Then I made a double bogey, followed by another bogey, and finished with par. Those last three holes really hurt my game. I ended up one over par," said Murphy. His two-day total is 143. Matt Johnston of Winnipeg, MB is seven strokes back at 145.

The girls division has a new leader. Patti Hogeboom of Glenburnie, ON came back from a first-round 82, and carded a second round 76. The score advanced her from fifth to first heading into tomorrow's final round. Megan Chapman of Collingwood, ON and Anita Gahir of Thornhill, ON sit just one stroke behind Hogeboom.

Cody Pickard of Thornhill, ON increased his lead over the bantam division to ten strokes after shooting a second-round 75. Picard's 157 total was ten strokes better than Ryan Sevigny of Stittsville, ON and 17 strokes ahead of Nick Halliday of Caledonia, ON.
