Alberta Wins Team Championship at Canadian Mid-Amateur

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:43:49

"Halifax, NS - Alberta's mid-amateur team had a couple of tough acts to follow: the amateur team won the Willingdon Cup at the Canadian Amateur last week, at the same time as Alberta's women's team won their national amateur championship. It was the mid-amateur team's turn to step up to the tee and follow suit. And they did.

Alberta, who had never previously won a mid-amateur team championship, finished with a 451 to win the R. Bruce Forbes trophy at the 16th Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association and hosted by the New Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax, NS.

The team held a 7-stroke lead over rival Qubec heading into Wednesday's final round of the team championship. Last year, Qubec defeated Alberta by a single stroke. This year, Alberta was primed to settle the score.

"We came so close to winning last year, and to be defeated by a single stroke really hurt," reflected Kelly Risling of Medicine Hat, who played on Alberta's team last year as well. "We weren't going to let it happen again."

Risling wasn't as confident at the start of Wednesday's round as he was at the start of the championship. Playing alongside Qubec's Peter Malo, Risling made three bogeys and a double bogey on his first four holes. Malo carded three pars.

"A lot goes through your mind when you start off that bad. All I could think about was how I was hurting my team. Qubec gained four shots right off the top. It's tough to come back on this course when you're four back after four holes," said Risling.

Amazingly enough, that's just what Risling did. By the 17th hole, his score was even with Malo's. His goal - and the goal of the entire Alberta team - was to score lower than the Qubec player in their respective pairings in order to seal a victory. And while he didn't come up lower than Malo - both men shot a two-day 151 - Risling couldn't be more pleased with his round, and proud for his team.

"To have started out badly, kept going, and finish with a respectable round has made this one of the most satisfying rounds of my golfing career. I didn't want to let my team down; we've all worked so hard, and it paid off today," said Risling.

Alberta finished 12 strokes ahead of Qubec, who shares fourth place with Manitoba. Team Ontario is in second with 459, and Nova Scotia placed third with 461.

The team championship portion of the mid-amateur is completed and each man will be out for himself during Thursday's final round of stroke play; however, Alberta team captain Dwight Sandquist of Calgary said the team will remain comrades, not competitors.

"The team championship may be over when individual play resumes tomorrow, but I'll still be rooting for the guys on my team," said Sandquist. "I've played with the same three guys for years, and I want to see them do well."

In the stroke play competition, Alan Gladwin of Lower Sackville, NS leads the field after the second round of the 16th Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship. Gladwin, the only score under par Tuesday, shot a 1-under 71 for a total 144 to take a 3-stroke lead over first-round leader David Schultz of St. Joseph, MI. Mel Murray of Fredericton, NB is in third.
