American David Shultz Leads Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship
Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:43:45
David Schultz of St. Joseph, MI carded a 1-under 71 to top the leaderboard after round one of the 16th Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association and hosted by the New Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax, NS.
Schultz, 45, only started playing golf seriously this season. Before that, he competed socially in local tournaments. Now he has objectives for his game, to play nationally and internationally.
"At the start of the summer, my goal was to compete in qualifiers and make it to tournament play. I'm qualifying to play in every tournament I go to, so now I'm aiming to win," said Schultz.
He's off to a good start, having made four birdies - three in the first four holes - 27 putts, and only three bogies during Tuesday's first round. Schultz hit good drives off the tee, hitting 11 fairways, and he made every putt within six feet of the hole disappear - every putt except his final putt on the par-4 18th hole.
"I hit driver off the tee to the middle of the fairway, leaving me 95 yards short of the flagstick. The shot was uphill and downwind. I hit my gap wedge past the hole, and the ball rolled off the green. I putted from the fringe to four feet, and missed the putt. It was a bad way to end the round," said Schultz.
This is Schultz's first Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship, and only his second tournament in Canada. He competed last week in the Canadian Amateur Championship at Fraser Edmundston Golf Club in New Brunswick and was defeated by Ryan Swelin of Sundry, BC in the first round of match play.
One stroke behind Schultz, tied for second, is local favourite Paul Batchelor of Bedford, NS and Thomas Skinner of Red Deer, AB.
Team Alberta is primed to claim its first provincial team championship ever at the mid-amateur. With a first-round total of 221, the province holds a commanding 7-stroke lead over second-place Quebec after the first round of the team championship. Prince Edward Island shares third with Saskatchewan. The closest Alberta has come to bringing the title out west was in 1994 when the team finished second.
