Bourgeois Widens Lead at Future Links Atlantic Championship
Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:41:37
Bourgeois carded a 71, putting him seven under par after 36 holes, and awarding him a comfortable lead over his competition. However, after setting an Avondale Golf Course record yesterday, Bourgeois' 1-under second round left him disappointed - and determined to bring out his best game tomorrow.
"I didn't judge the wind very well and the result was that I hit some shots that didn't turn out very good at all. I almost always hit the fairway off the tee, but today, I hooked the ball into the woods more than once. Tomorrow I'll stay focused and keep my mind on the shot ahead. I'm aiming to shoot under par again," said Bourgeois.
Ryan Vassel of Toronto, ON, Michel Landry of Tracadie, NB, and David Williamson of Halifax, NS have to shoot well under par to eliminate the ten-stroke deficit that separates them from Bourgeois, and the title. Vassel shot a second-round 73; Landry carded a 74. Williamson jumped from seventh to second place after shooting a second-round 72. Tomorrow he'll try to move into first place.
"I have to get the putts to drop if I want a chance at the title. I left almost every single putt short today. I could have easily taken seven or eight strokes off my game if I'd just landed the putts. My strategy for tomorrow is to play aggressively and go for the flagstick," said Williamson.
Landry's strategy is to gain confidence early in his round. "I want to make some birdies right away tomorrow, and work from there," said Landry. "It's not going to be easy though, recovering and coming out on top when I'm heading into the final round ten strokes back."
The most exciting round of the day came from 13-year-old Laura Harris of New Minas, NS. The youngest female competitor in the tournament, Harris carded a 78 today to put her in contention for the girls division title.
It's only her first season playing in national tournaments, yet Harris is keeping pace with the leaders. She shares second with Bank of Montreal Future Links Quebec Champion Isabelle Gendreau of St-Georges de Beauce, QC with a 159. She trails just two strokes behind leader Michelle Williams of Wolfville, NS.
It isn't the first time Harris has edged in on 17-year-old Williams. She won the midget division of the Nova Scotia Junior Championship earlier this month, and was runner-up to Williams overall. In the Atlantic Junior Championships she took home third place, just one stroke behind Williams (who won the championship in a playoff).
"It's really great competing against Michelle [Williams]. She's a great golfer and she really pushes me to play my best game. My game has improved to the point that I'm always just a couple strokes behind her," said Harris.
In the bantam division Julien Proulx of Cap-Rouge, QC fired a second-round 75 to edge out leader Vincent Adams of Boisbriand, QC, and gain a seven-stroke lead. Proulx has a 158 heading into the final round. Adams is at 165. Jonathan Read of Sackville, NB is in third, 16 strokes behind the leader.
Team New Brunswick didn't let up during the final round of the Atlantic Junior Championship, which ran in conjunction with the Bank of Montreal Future Links Atlantic Championship. Team New Brunswick took home championship trophies in all three categories: Junior (17-18yrs), Juvenile (15-16yrs), and Midget (13-14yrs).
