Bourgeois Wins Future Links Atlantic Championship

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:41:39

"Vernon River, PE - Marc Bourgeois, fresh off a victory at the New Brunswick Junior, continued his hot streak with a win at the Bank of Montreal Future Links Atlantic Championship, at Avondale Golf Course in Vernon River, PE.

Bourgeois, of Dieppe, NB fired a final-round 74 to finish five under par after 54 holes, and 12 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Brodie Flanders. Bourgeois, who, on the first day of tournament play, set an Avondale Golf Course record 66, was thrilled with his win.

"I feel so great right now. I came in to this championship hoping to win; my goal was to finish two under. I ended up finishing five under. My only real disappointment came today; I wanted to shoot par or under on the final round. I came so close, but I missed a couple putts for par on the back and finished two over for the round," said Bourgeois.

David Williamson of Halifax, NS shared second place heading into today's final round. He left his putts short yesterday, so he took a more aggressive approach today. The strategy was there, but the ball simply refused to go in.

"A typical hole for me during today's round went something like this: a good driver down the middle; an iron shot to 15 feet. A good-looking putt that would always come to land mere inches from the hole," said Williamson of his round. "Right now I'm playing golf at a 'B+' level, I need to be at an 'A' level to beat someone like Bourgeois. I'll take another stab at it next week at the Canadian Junior Championship in Saskatoon."

Isabelle Gendreau of St-Georges de Beauce, QC turned in a tournament score of 237 to edge Michelle Williams out of the lead and claim the Bank of Montreal Future Links Atlantic Championship girls division title. Nearly three weeks ago Gendreau won the Bank of Montreal Future Links Quebec Championship in Laval, QC.

Gendreau, who entered the final round two strokes behind Williams, made her charge early, scoring par on the first six holes while Williams made two bogies and a double. At the turn Gendreau was leading by four. She continued to play steady, and after 18 holes, she won by six.

"I'm so happy to have recovered from a two-stroke deficit, get back in the game, and win with strokes to spare," said Gendreau. "At the same time I feel for Michelle [Williams]. She had some bad breaks."

"My putts just weren't dropping," said Williams of her round. "I made 42 putts today (seven putts more than Gendreau). I tried to get back in the game, but I just couldn't.``

In the bantam division, Julien Proulx of Cap-Rouge, QC captured his second Bank of Montreal Future Links title. Proulx will add his Bank of Montreal Future Links Atlantic Championship bantam division title to the one he earned in Laval, QC three weeks ago. Proulx shot a tournament score of 235 to defeat Vincent Adams of Boisbriand, QC, and Jonathan Read of Sackville, NB by 15 and 25 strokes respectively.
