Competition Heats Up at Canadian Mid-Amateur

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:43:56

"Halifax, NS - Alan Gladwin of Lower Sackville, NS, and W. David Schultz of Calgary, AB are the men to beat heading into the first round of match play at the16th Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association and hosted by the New Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax, NS.

Second-round leader Alan Gladwin, who was even par heading into today's final round of stroke play, shot a 78 to give him a three-round total of 222. Although Gladwin came out on top, he was less than thrilled with his round.

"I really struggled with the greens on the front. I couldn't sink a putt to save my life," said Gladwin, who made five bogeys on the front nine and was 5-over at the turn. Things improved for Gladwin on the back.

"Luckily I was able to hold my round together and hit every green on the back. I only had one three-putt," said Gladwin.

Unlike Gladwin, W. David Schultz got off to a good start with a six-foot birdie on the third hole. Then his luck changed.

"I bogeyed the 5th hole and that set me off on a bad streak for the next four holes," said Schultz. A bogey on the 7th and 9th holes left him doubting he'd make the cut. A chip in for birdie on the 10th hole, however, renewed his faith in his game.

"I didn't think I was going to make it to match play after nine holes," said Schultz, "but the birdie on ten gave me renewed hope. Today was a grind, just trying to hold on, but here I am with medallist honours. I feel confident heading into tomorrow's first match."

Schultz, who won this championship in 1999, is confident, but not cocky. "Some of the guys that just sneak in to the top 32 feel lucky and go into their first match and shoot the lights out. Every match is going to be tough. You never know what will happen," said Schultz.

Schultz will face off against 32nd seed Angelo Stoumos of Toronto, ON in tomorrow's first round of match play.
