Eight Advance to Canadian Amateur Quarter Finals

"Edmundston, NB - Up again, down again is the only way to describe the matches that took place during Thursday-afternoon match play at the 98th Canadian Amateur Championship conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association and hosted by the Fraser Edmundston Golf Club in Edmundston, NB.

Better than half of the matches were decided with playoffs. None was more exciting than the match between 64th seeded Garth Collings of Winnipeg, MB and 16 seed Bill Seagris of Red Rock, ON.

"I had a start that no player wants; one bad break, then he makes a birdie, and I mess the next two holes up. It's an uphill battle from there," said Seagris.

Seagris got one back on hole No. 9, but was down again when Collings landed a 30-foot putt on the next hole. Seagris cut his 4-hole deficit in half with victories on holes No. 11 and 13, and was able to hold off Collings, but when the pair reached hole No. 16, Seagris was two down with two holes to go.

"We were both on the green. I was closest, about eight feet away from the hole. Then Collings sank a12 footer, forcing me to make my putt, or go home - so I did. I always give myself chances and hit the ball well when I know I have to," said Seagris.

Seagris continued on to win holes No. 17 and 18, forcing the pair to go to a playoff. The men tied the next hole, but an eagle by Seagris on the 20th hole, secured him a place in Saturday's quarterfinals.

Like Seagris, Ronald Harvey Jr. of Picadilly, NB was down for much of his afternoon match. Harvey, the host province's last chance for a shot at the title, squared off against Anthony Warren of Charlottetown, PE. Some big numbers in the middle of his round prevented Harvey from gaining much ground.

Harvey was able to keep Warren from running away with the lead - Warren was never more than 2-up - but it wasn't until close to the end that Harvey took control of the match. On hole No. 14 Warren lost his tee shot; Harvey jumped at the chance to capitalize on his opponent's mistake.

"I took out my 2-iron and hit my first fairway all day. I won the hole and got back in the game," said Harvey.

Harvey surrendered the next hole, No. 15, leaving him two down with three to play. "I wouldn't have bet money on myself to win," said Harvey. However, the two were all square after 17 holes. They halved 18 and went to a playoff. A tee shot too far right cost Warren the match, and Harvey advances to the quarterfinals.

Earlier in the day, three of the four remaining players from the tournament host province were defeated in the second round of match play at the 98th Canadian Amateur Championship. Brodie Flanders of Fawcett Hill, Greg Breen of Hampton and Darren Ritchie of Quispamsis lost their respective matches.
