Garth Collings Upsets Medalist Lee Curry in First Round at Canadian Amateur Championship

Collings, seeded 64th, eliminated medallist Lee Curry of Kemptville, ON 5 and 3 in the first round of match play at the 98th Canadian Amateur Championship conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association and hosted by Fraser Edmundston Golf Club in Edmundston, NB.
Collings was one of two players to advance from a 10-player playoff Thursday morning and secure a spot in the first round of match play. For Collings, the most important strategy heading into a match against with the low qualifier was to not lose his cool.
"I didn't let Lee [Curry] intimidate me. I know that in match play anything can happen. I really tried to just keep my mind focused on my game and work on grinding out the pars. " said Collings.
His game plan worked. Collings got off to a shaky start, and was one down after one. But he came back in fine style, and was up three at the turn. He surrendered Hole No. 10 to Curry's birdie, but some unsettled play on the part of Curry secured Collings a place in the next round.
He will face off against Greg Breen of Hampton, NB in Friday's morning match. The two played with each other during Wednesday's second round. Breen was seeded 33rd heading into match play.
Collings has played in 11 Canadian Amateur Championships and has advanced as far as the quarterfinals.
Brodie Flanders of Fawcett Hill, NB is playing in his first Canadian Amateur Championship. He is one of four players from the host province to advance to the second round of match play.
Seeded 3, Flanders won 4 and 3 over James Currie of London, ON. With wins on the first three holes, and four birdies on the first nine holes, Flanders cruised to a 5-up advantage at the turn. His luck shifted, however, and he nearly lost his lead.
"I was walking all over James [Currie] until we were backed up at the turn. The wait cost me my momentum and gave James a chance to pull his game back together and gain some holes," said Flanders.
Currie won the next three holes, leaving Flanders only two holes up. But some strong play coming in was enough to give Flanders a 4 and 3 victory over Currie.
Flanders will square off against Charlie Woo of Markham, ON Friday morning. Woo was this year's Ontario Amateur Champion. It took Woo 20 holes to defeat Pierre H. Fortin of Gatineau, QC.
Other players from New Brunswick to advance were Greg Breen of Hampton, Darren Ritchie of Quispamsis, and Ronald Harvey Jr. of Picadilly. Leon Carter of River Bourgeois, NS defeated Michel Landry of Tracadie 1 up.
The first round of match play took place Thursday, August 15. Second and third rounds are scheduled for Friday, August 16. The quarter-final and semifinal matches will be held Saturday, August 17, and the 36-hole championship final on Sunday, August 18.
