James Lepp in Familiar Territory Heading into Final Round of Canadian Junior Championship

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:41:56

"Saskatoon, SK - James Lepp of Abbotsford, BC is looking for his second straight Canadian Junior title.

Lepp carded a 3-under 68 to take a convincing five-stroke lead heading into the final round of the 64th Canadian Junior Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association and hosted by the Saskatoon Golf & Country Club in Saskatoon, SK.

Lepp, 18, started the day just one stroke ahead of Michel Landry of Tracadie, NB. After nine holes, two birdies and a bogey, Lepp was nine under for the tournament. With a three-stroke lead over contenders Landry and Richard Scott of Kingsville, ON, Lepp was still within reach.

The defending champ turned up the heat at the turn, making a birdie on hole No.10, and following it up with an eagle on the 13th. He only slipped up once, on the final hole. Hitting what looked like solid shots, Lepp still made bogey on hole No. 18, for the second day in a row.

"It's frustrating because I hit a good tee shot, followed it with a good approach shot, made a good putt, and still bogeyed the hole," said Lepp.

He'll take his strategy of shooting par and landing birdies on the par-5s into tomorrow's final round. Competitors Scott, Mackenzie, and Landry will have to get aggressive tomorrow if they want to stop Lepp.

After the turn, Landry and Scott had some bad breaks. Both bogeyed hole No. 10, and Landry bogeyed No. 12 as well. Scott birdied hole No.13 and carded pars for the rest of the round. Landry bogeyed two more holes to give him a 75 for the day and put him in fourth.

One group ahead of the leaders, Kyle Mackenzie of Listowel, ON was making a charge for the lead. And while he didn't quite catch Lepp, he was on a roll until the very end. Mackenzie, who started the day tied for fourth, finished the front nine two under par. Mackenzie birdied holes No. 12 and 13 to put him in good position to challenge Lepp's increasing lead. However, he double-bogeyed hole No. 18, and finished third after the round.

Seann Harlingten, the only American in the tournament, from Rancho Mirage, CA shot a 2-under 69 to move him to the top of the leaderboard in the juvenile division. Second-round leader David Stewart of Prince Albert, SK shot a 75 to put him tied for fourth with Dale Vallely of Lethbridge, AB in the juvenile division. Keven Fortin-Simard of Roberval, QC is one stroke behind Harlingten, and Colin Norris of Calgary, AB is three strokes behind the juvenile leader.
