Kate Golden Leads After Opening Round of Canadian Womens Open

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:43:04

"Montreal - Kate Golden burst on to the scene in the opening round of the Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Open, firing a 5-under 67 for sole possession of the lead at Canada's only LPGA Tour event.

Mi Hyun Kim sits one stroke back at 68, while five others finished two strokes back at 69: Kelly Robbins, Hee-Won Han, Michelle Redman, Gloria Park, and Michelle Ellis.

Golden's round included four birdies and an eagle on the ninth, her final hole.

"It was a real positive way to finish off," said Golden. " I looked at it from the back and it just didn't look like it was going to break very much. It got just the right line and just the right speed and just kind of fell right in. Those are the ones that make you want to play again."

Lanie Cahill and junior sensation Eom-Ji Park were the low Canadians, finishing at 1-over for a share of 30th. Both golfers qualified for the Open through their performance on the Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Tour this year.

"It's fun to be here," said Cahill, a resident of Brockville Ontario. "I was pretty nervous on the first hole, hit it left and missed the green, but then birdied six and eight so by the time I made the turn I was feeling pretty relaxed. It's my mother's birthday today so I'm glad I played well for her."

Seventeen-year old Park kept her cool, carding three birdies to find herself tied with the likes of Jan Stephenson and Se Ri Pak. Instead of being overwhelmed by playing in her first LPGA event next to many of her idols, the Vancouver teen is already focused on tomorrow's round.

"I'm loving this," said Park. "It's like a dream come true. Tomorrow I'm just going to play my game and concentrate; that's what I have to do."
