Stephenson will be hoping to repeat her previous success at Summerlea, the site of her 1981 victory in Canada's only LPGA Tour event.
"We are proud to announce that Jan Stephenson plans to return to Summerlea for the Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Open," said Richard Desrochers, Chief Operating officer, Royal Canadian Golf Association. "She is truly a legend of the game and a wonderful ambassador for women's golf. We know her legions of Canadian fans will be delighted to have the opportunity to see her play here once again."
"We are thrilled to welcome Jan Stephenson to Montreal," said Francois Hudon, Senior Vice-President, Quebec Region, Bank of Montreal. "Her outstanding career in women's professional golf is truly an inspiration to the next generation of women golfers. Jan's presence at the 2002 Bank of Montreal Canadian Women's Open is sure to add another level of excitement to Canada's premier women's golf event."
Stephenson, who was recognized during the LPGA's 50th Anniversary in 2000 as one of the LPGA's top 50 players and teachers, was on hand today in Montreal, along with officials from the Bank of Montreal and RCGA, to kick off festivities leading up to the only Canadian stop on the 2002 LPGA Tour.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for me to revisit Summerlea Golf and Country Club," says Stephenson, who is playing out her last LPGA season before joining the Women's Senior Golf Tour full time in 2003. "I have very fond memories of my victory here in Canada and plan on doing my utmost to challenge for the win again. It would be wonderful to leave the LPGA Tour with another Canadian title."
