Lee Curry Captures Medallist Honors at 98th Canadian Amateur

Curry carded a 2-under 68 Wednesday, to finish 6-under for the tournament, a single stroke ahead of Michael Mezei of Lethbridge, AB. Thunderstorms suspended play yesterday afternoon, and stroke play concluded Thursday morning. Curry was named low medallist following the completion of the stroke play competition.
Curry had two goals heading into this championship: to win medallist honors, and to claim the 98th Canadian Amateur title. This morning's confirmation of Curry as low medallist marked the achievement of his first goal; he'll work towards his second goal this afternoon with the start of match play against Garth Collings of Winnipeg, MB.
"I've competed in the Canadian Amateur five times, and never made it past the third round of match play. The same player has beaten me the last two years. Fortunately, he's not here this year to stop me so I'm going for the win," said Curry.
The 23 year old said that being seeded first heading into match play has boosted his confidence. However, he realizes that the second portion of the championship is a whole new game.
"Mentally, I'll feed off the last two days; my confidence is definitely up right now. But everything changes this afternoon when match play starts," said Curry.
Another player full of confidence heading into match play Thursday afternoon is Luke Scrymgeour of Calgary, AB. Scrymgeour carded a 6-under 64 - the lowest round at Fraser Edmundston Golf Club since 1956.
The only other time a player has shot a 64 at Fraser Edmundston Golf Club was when the Canadian Amateur Championship was last held at the course, 46 years ago. Moe Norman of Kitchener, ON shot a 64 to defeat Lyle Crawford of Vancouver, BC in the final round of match play. Scrymgeour, who finished stroke play five strokes back of Curry, hopes to follow in the footsteps of the past champion.
"We'll see what happens this afternoon, but I'm heading into match play with tons of confidence. Plus I feel like I have special boost today, with the only other player ever to have shot a 64 having won this championship," said Scrymgeour.
The first round of match play will take place Thursday, August 15, with the second and third rounds scheduled for Friday, August 16. The quarter-final and semifinal matches will be held Saturday, August 17, and the 36-hole championship final on Sunday, August 18.
