RCGA Announces Canadians Playing in Bell Canadian Open

The Canadian entry is a mix of well-known pros such as Weir, Ian Leggatt and Richard Zokol, and some of the nation's hottest young amateurs. Lee Curry, Dan Swanson and junior champion James Lepp hope their experience at the Open will boost them to a strong showing in October as they represent Canada in the World Amateur Golf Team Championship.
"We are delighted to have such a strong field of Canadians competing at this year's Bell Canadian Open," said Bill Paul, RCGA Managing Director of Tour and Player Relations. "These players are looking forward to competing at our national open championship and I know they will be favourites with the fans at Angus Glen."
The Canadian players are:
Gordon Burns, Ajax, ON
Lee Curry (a), Ottawa, ON
Todd Fanning, Winnipeg, MB
Derek Gillespie, Oshawa, ON
Glen Hnatiuk, Selkirk, MB
Ian Leggatt, Cambridge, ON
James Lepp (a), Abbotsford, BC
Rob McMillan, Winnipeg, MB
Michael Mezei (a), Lethbridge, MB
Jon Mills, Brooklin, ON
David Morland IV, Aurora, ON
Jim Rutledge, Victoria, BC
Dan Swanson (a), Surrey, B.C.
Mike Weir, Bright's Grove, ON
Richard Zokol, Richmond, BC
(a) indicates amateur
While the field is expected to include many of the top golfers on the PGA Tour, one notable player who had earlier announced his intention to attend will not be appearing at Angus Glen. Phil Mickelson informed tournament organizers late this week that he would be unable to play due to a back injury.
"Naturally we are disappointed that Phil won't be joining us this year," said Paul. "Though he had indicated to us earlier that he hoped to come, injuries do occur and we understand that his health is a priority."
The 2002 Bell Canadian Open runs September 2 - 8 at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ontario. A limited number of daily tickets are still available for Wednesday through Saturday by calling 1-800-571-OPEN (6736).
