Scott, Landry Lead Canadian Junior Championship

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 00:17:38

Vernon River, PE - Michel Landry of Tracadie, NB and Richard Scott of Kingsville, ON both fired a 5-under 66 to pace a tightly contested field at the 64th Canadian Junior Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association, hosted by the Saskatoon Golf & Country Club in Saskatoon, SK.

Landry,17, carded two eagles and three birdies en route to a tournament-low round. While he's thrilled with his round, Landry says he got off to a shaky start.

"I had a terrible first few holes. I started the day off with a birdie but then went and bogeyed holes five and six," said Landry. But he came back in style, making an eagle on the eighth and 11th holes.

"I made a nice eagle on eight, hitting on to the green in two and sinking a five foot putt. On eleven, I took a chance and hit my driver over the trees, landing 240 yards out. From there, I hit my 2-iron straight into the bunker left of the green - about ten yards from the flagstick. I chipped in and landed the shot," said Landry.

Landry finished with an easy birdie on the 18th hole, to put him one round closer to his second major victory of the summer. Landry won the New Brunswick Amateur three weeks ago. He also placed third in the province's junior championship.

Scott is no stranger to championship wins either. The 18-year-old won the Ontario Junior Tournament of Champions in Toronto earlier in the season. Last summer, he was runner up at the 2001 US Junior Championship. He's set to play golf at the University of Georgia in the fall.

Putting the pressure on Scott and Landry is Michael Keast of Winnipeg, MB. Keast, who recently won the Manitoba Amateur, shot a 67 and sits one stroke back of the leaders. Defending champion James Lepp of Abbotsford, BC shares eighth spot four strokes behind the leaders.

The low Sasketchewan score came from juvenile Richard Judelson of Regina, SK. Judelson,16, carded a 3-under 68. He credits his low score to a solid short game.

"I'm really pleased because my short game was right on. It could have been a pretty bad round but my putting saved me. I've never putted so well before," said Judelson.

Judelson finished with 24 putts for the round. While Judelson secured the low score for the province, he isn't playing on the Saskatchewan Team. He surrendered his spot to Blane Nieman of Saskatoon in a playoff.

Judelson's round-one 68 puts him three strokes ahead of team captain Dave Stewart of Prince Albert, SK. Team mates Robin Vallis of Aberdeen, Brad Piero of Regina, and Blane Nieman of Saskatoon, shot 74, 78, and 81 respectively.

Operating in conjunction with the 64th Canadian Junior Championship is the Canadian Junior Provincial Team Championship. Ontario leads the other provinces, but just barely. The province holds a fragile one-stroke lead over team New Brunswick. Team British Columbia is in third just two strokes behind Ontario, and team Alberta, which won the provincial team championships last year, is in third, nine strokes back of Ontario. Team Manitoba shares fourth with 218 strokes.
