Taylor Shoots 5-under to Lead 98th Canadian Amateur
Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:42:33
Taylor, 23, fired a 5-under 65 to take the lead at the 98th Canadian Amateur Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association and hosted by Fraser Edmundston Golf Club in Edmundston, NB. His game plan, he says, is playing one shot at a time.
"I step on the tee and try to hit the fairway. I step on the fairway and try to hit the green. I step on the green and try to make the putt. I try to keep my game as simple as possible," said Taylor.
Taylor's shot-by-shot strategy worked for him today, and it worked for him last week. Fresh off a win at the Barrett East Coast Amateur Championship in St. Andrews, NB, Taylor also won the Prince Edward Island Amateur last month.
This is Taylor's last chance at a Canadian amateur title. He recently graduated from Louisiana State University, and intends to turn pro next week.
One stroke behind Taylor, tied in second place with Lee Curry of Kemptville, ON, is Ron Harvey Jr. of Picadilly, NB. Although his missed making the provincial team by a single stroke, Harvey holds New Brunswick's top spot after round one of the 98th Canadian Amateur Championship.
Harvey, who carded five birdies, an eagle, and three bogeys to finish four under par, nearly finished tied with the leader; however a missed putt for birdie on the 18th hole held him back.
"I hit the ball to eight feet on my approach shot. I misread the putt and it stopped two inches to the left of the hole. I made par," said Harvey.
The same hole that gave more than half of the field problems - 83 bogeyed the hole, 29 made par, and only two players made birdie - gave Harvey trouble too.
Hole No. 3, normally a par-5, is playing as a par-4 at the 98th Canadian Amateur Championship. At close to 500 yards, players are calling it the most challenging hole of the course. It's a dogleg right, and the fairway is bordered with long rough and woods on both sides. If that isn't enough, the fairway slopes left and the green is guarded by a bunker on either side. Harvey was able to keep his ball out of the bunkers and trees on the left.
"I hit a bad drive into the rough on the right. I thought my second shot was good; it landed on the green, but rolled right past the hole and came to rest in the rough that borders the green. I chipped on, missed the putt, and made bogey," said Harvey.
Taylor was one of the few who made par on the difficult hole. Craig Doell of Victoria, BC, wasn't so lucky. Doell, who sits in fourth with a 67, says his ball followed the sloping fairway and landed in the rough to the left.
"I had a terrible lie in the rough off the tee, and I couldn't get at the ball. Needless to say, I bogeyed the hole. Otherwise, I was hitting close shots all day," said Doell, who has played in ten Canadian Amateur Championships since 1989.
Team Qubec is primed to claim its first Willingdon Cup provincial team championship in five years. The province holds a fragile 2-stroke lead over second-place Alberta after the first round of the 75th Wellingdon Cup Provincial Team Championship. British Columbia is in third. Qubec won its last Willingdon Cup in 1997; the province defeated British Columbia by a single stroke.
