Adam Short Wins Canadian Tours Fall Q-School
Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:44:55
Short, a former Tour member, finished with a 90-hole total of 6-under 354, two shots ahead of Quebec City's Dave Levesque. Drew Symons of Woodstock, ON wound up at 1-under 359. Craig Matheson of Aurora, ON, who carried a two-shot edge into Friday's final round, struggled to a 9-over 81 but was still able to hold on to one of the 15 exempt cards the Tour awarded for the 2003 season. Walter Keating of Thunder Bay, ON grabbed non-exempt playing privileges despite playing all week with a broken rib. Keating and seven others squared off in an eight-man playoff for the final three exempt cards Friday, which were earned by Kevin Jones, Adam Speirs and Steve Davey.
But the day belonged to Short, who played on the Canadian Tour last year but was unable to hang on to his card. After playing his trade on the DP Tour this summer, where he made eight cuts in a row, Short returned to Royal Ashburn this week and made a statement that he could be one of the Canadians to watch once the Tour season kicks off in the New Year.
"I came here looking to get the job done, to get back on Tour, and I was able to do that," said the 25 year old. "To win is just a huge bonus. It's been a long wait, and it feels pretty good right about now."
Just after signing his scorecard Friday, Short called his father Kerry, a longtime Canadian Tour member, in Vineland to deliver the good news. "My dad is pretty proud right now, and I owe a lot to him for turning my game around," he added. "We've worked together for a long time, and it looks like it has all paid off."
Short admitted his first season on the Canadian Tour was a learning experience, something he felt Matheson will come to understand as he heads into his rookie campaign.
"I feel bad that Craig had to go through a round like that today, especially after playing so well for most of the week. But all golfers have to be there to understand the pressure, and he will learn from (Friday). I went through it myself, but right now I am playing the best golf of my life. I can't wait for the season to start."
