Drew Symons Leads After Opening Round of Canadian Tours Fall Q-School

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:44:40

"ASHBURN, ON--Drew Symons of Woodstock, ON grabbed the early lead Monday after the opening round of the Canadian Tour's Fall Qualifying School.

Symons opened with a 4-under 68 at Royal Ashburn Golf Club, two shots better than Dave Levesque, Craig Matheson, Brad Moore and Julian James. Six others carded a 1-under 71.

The Canadian Tour will award 15 exempt and a minimum of ten non-exempt cards for the 2003 season after the 90-hole tournament wraps up Friday. The starting field of 110 will be reduced to the low 60 scores plus ties after Thursday's fourth round.

Symons is coming off a mediocre Tour season in which he finished 92nd on the money list, two spots lower than what was needed to keep non-exempt playing privileges for next season. But on Monday, the 28-year old had five birdies and a bogey to get the early jump.

"To say this past season was frustrating would be an understatement," admitted Symons, who missed 4 of 8 cuts during the Tour's U.S. swing to kick off the campaign. "Usually you can bank on a hot week or two, but it didn't happen for me. I played better once we got into Canada (in June), but I had put myself into too much of a hole by that point."

Symons joined the Canadian Tour at Fall Q-school in 1999, the same year he won the Ontario Amateur Championship. This week, he finds himself back where it all began. And while Symons would rather have his card secured for next year, he feels Q-school may help erase the memory of a year he would rather forget.

"No one wants to be back here, but you have to look at it as an opportunity. I just feel more relaxed and that allowed me to play without any pressure today. I'll go out there, treat it like any other tournament and try to win. It's a chance to wipe the slate clean and get a fresh start."

Scores Monday after the opening round of the Canadian Tour's Fall Qualifying School being played at the 6842-yard, par-72 Royal Ashburn GC (15 exempt and a minimum of 10 non-exempt cards to be awarded for the 2003 Canadian Tour season after Friday's final round):
