Final Four Qualify for Bell Canadian Open

"Markham, Ont. - Four golfers topped a field of 45 today at Mandarin Golf & Country Club in Markham, Ontario, to qualify for the Bell Canadian Open. Iain Steel of Pelham, AL, Todd Doohan of Sarnia, Ont., Mike Grob of Billings, MT, and Dave Christensen of Elk River, MN earned the final four spots for Canada's national Open championship, being played September 2-8 at Angus Glen Golf Club.

Steel shot a course record 64 to take top honours, followed by Doohan and Grob with 66. Dave Christensen defeated Victoria B.C.'s Paul Devenport in a playoff for the final spot, after tying with a score of 68.

The playoff lasted only two holes, with both players birdying #1, and Christensen emerging victorious on 18. This year's Open marks only the second PGA Tour event for Christensen, 26. He played in the 2001 Bell Canadian Open but did not make the cut.

"What an exciting playoff, " said Christensen. "I'm incredibly excited to play in another PGA Tour event. Last year I didn't finish very well at all in the Open; but I learned a lot and I'm looking forward to applying my experience to this year's event."

Bell Canadian Open action continues all week with a practice round Tuesday, championship pro-am Wednesday, and championship play Thursday through Sunday. Daily tickets still remain for Tuesday through Saturday and are available by calling 1-800-571-OPEN. Juniors aged 15 and under are permitted free grounds access when accompanied by a ticketed adult.
