Lancaster and Andrade Lead After Second Round of Bell Canadian Open

Tue, 03 Mar 2009 01:44:26

"Markham, Ont. - Neal Lancaster and Billy Andrade shot 5-under 67s today in the second round of the Bell Canadian Open, to share the lead at -11. Canadian Ian Leggatt sits just one stroke behind, tied with first-round leader Grant Waite.

Lancaster had a slow start to his second round, missing an 8-foot par putt on his first hole, followed by missed birdie putts on the next two holes. A 20-foot putt for birdie on the fifth hole got his mental game back on track.

"My confidence was shot after the first few holes," said Lancaster, who carded five subsequent birdies to finish with a two-day total of 133. "I wasn't swinging like I wanted to swing. It was only that great putt on the fifth that got me back in a positive frame of mind."

Andrade started his round with a string of birdies on holes 2, 3, and 4. A bogey on the sixth hole upset his mental game but he recovered, carding birdies on the 14th and 16th holes to keep pace with Lancaster.

Canadians had a banner day today, led by Leggatt and Monday qualifier Todd Doohan who each fired 65s for the day's low score. Leggatt fired four birdies over his last five holes, and narrowly missed an eagle putt on his 18th to join the leaders.

With no Canadian winning the national Open championship since Pat Fletcher in 1954, Leggatt feels some extra pressure heading into the weekend.

"I've spent a lot of years getting ready for this. There's no doubt about it, winning the Bell Canadian Open would be so special for me," he said. "It's the biggest tournament we have here in Canada, and to win it would be equal to winning a Masters or a US Open for sure."

Fellow Canadians Mike Weir and Richard Zokol are also well-positioned after two rounds. Weir carded a 2-under 70 today while Zokol, who started the day in 65th, went six-under through his first eight holes en route to a 67. They now share 17th spot with a 5-under 139.
