Symons Continues to Lead at CanTours Fall Q-School

Carrying a two-shot edge into play Tuesday, the 28-year old Symons now has a 36-hole total of 7-under 137, one stroke in front of Quebec City's Dave Levesque. Julian James of Ottawa and Craig Matheson of Aurora, ON are at 5-under 139.
After an opening round 68 in which he had just one bogey, Symons had more of a rollercoaster ride on Tuesday, with half a dozen birdies and three bogeys dotting his scorecard. "It was more of an up-and-down round today, I got off to a slow start but the putter began to work for me midway through the round," admitted Symons, who captured the Casino de Charlevoix Cup in Quebec last September with teammate and good friend Darren Griff. "I just tried to do the same things as I did yesterday, but playing with the lead makes you feel a little more relaxed. You know you don't have to go out there and shoot the lights out."
With 54 holes still left to play, Symons, a three-year Tour veteran who wound up 92nd on the money list this season, stressed he will not let up playing with the lead. After the field is reduced to the low 60 scores plus ties Thursday night, the Canadian Tour will award 15 exempt and a minimum of 10 non-exempt cards for the 2003 season following Friday's final round.
"I want to win this thing, so that is the only cushion I have," he added. "The problem arises when you just want to finish in the top 15 and try to coast in. You just have to go out there and play and not worry about where you wind up."
James is attempting to earn his first Tour card after missing out in his initial attempt one year ago. After contemplating his future on the links in recent weeks, James was aided by friend and businessman Jim Bursey, who bankrolled the 25-year-old's trip to Q-school.
"It's always been a dream of mine to be a pro golfer but after missing out last year, I thought maybe it wasn't meant to be," said James, a former three-time All Conference player at Coastal Carolina University. "I wasn't going to come here, but Jim believed in me, gave me the money and told me to give it a shot. I wouldn't be here if not for him, so it would mean a lot to get it done this week."
