Chris Vredeveld from University of Waterloo Leads Team After First Round of OUA

WATERLOO - OUA golfers will be braving the elements today as they compete in the final round of the OUA Golf Championships being held at Grey Silo Golf Course in Waterloo. Chris Vredeveld of Waterloo and Toronto Varsity Blue Michael Glenney had the low rounds of day one, both shooting an even par 71. Three golfers are one back of the lead. Brock's Steven Billyard, Waterloo's Justin Fluit and Laurier standout Jim Zwolak all shot 72 in yesterday's round. Glenney, Zwolak, Western's Pat Lindsay and Guelph's Oliver Tubb are the only players on the leaderboard who have won a tournament this season and will be looking to add the OUA Championship to their achievements. The golfer with the two-day low gross total will be awarded the Lee Shore Trophy.

With Waterloo's Vredeveld and Fluit shooting par and one over, respectively, the co-host Warriors are leading the team competition. With two players shooting 73 yesterday, Guelph follows a close second with McMaster one shot behind the Gryphons for third place. Each school has five golfers competing with the best four scores going towards the two-day low gross total.

For the first time, female golfers are competing in the Women's Individual Division. Leslie Painter from Guelph and Western's Lindsey Edmunds share the lead after shooting 84 in first round action. Windsor's Erin Byrne is two back of the lead and will be hoping to gain some ground today.

The golfers today will not only have to compete against each other and the course, but also the weather as wind and rain are in the forecast.
