Led by rookie Kellen Barber, who finished tied for second in individual play, the Marauders shot consistently throughout the two-day tournament. Barber shot a 2-over 73 in both rounds, with teammates Andrew McCarthy and Alf Callowhill matching their 76 and 78 first round scores respectively, in yesterday's final day.
Team captain, Aaron Weinberg, shot a 78 and 79 over his two days, with Scott Johnston scoring 82 in each of his two rounds. Co-host Waterloo Warriors, who led after day one, finished one shot back of the Marauders for a team total of 612.
The conditions must have affected the Warriors as they took 12 more shots on day two as they did on day one. First round leader, Warrior Chris Vredeveld, who shot an even par 71 Monday, followed with an 82 for his final round on Tuesday. Western rounded off the top three in team play with a team total of 615.
To add to the Marauders success, Katie McIntyre won the first women's division in OUA history in a thrilling one hole playoff. Tied after two rounds at 172, McIntyre and Windsor golfer Amy Nemeth headed back out into the cold to determine who would be crowned the first OUA Women's Champion. McIntyre emerged victorious.
Laurier standout Jim Zwolak capped off an impressive season as captured the OUA Men's Individual Champion. Shooting an even par 71 yesterday, Zwolak won the tournament by three strokes. The Dundas native finished in the top three in five tournaments this season, finishing first at the Guelph Invitational and now at the Championships. Three golfers finished tied for second place with a 146 two-day total including, McMaster's Barber(73, 73), Steven Billyard from Brock (72, 74) and University of Toronto's Michael Glenney (71, 75).
As official OUA Golf Championship sponsor, MikeWeir.com provided the individual winners and season all-stars with special prizes from Canada's top golfer. Zwolak and McIntyre each received an official Masters visor and pin flag signed by Weir, as well as a copy of Weir's first book, On Course With Mike Weir. Zwolak, as well as the other four season all-stars, Glenney, Barber, Oliver Tubb from Guelph and Western's Pat Lindsay, received an official Mike Weir golf bag.
Weir sent along a message to the competitors as well congratulating all the participants and stressing the importance of "Continued commitment and perseverance in both education and sports can only lead to great things. Best of luck to all of you." The OUA and its golf community would like to personally thank MikeWeir.com for supporting amateur university golf in Ontario.
