Nancy Harvey Retains LPGA Tour Card

""My goal was to come out here and shoot under par every day,"" said Lovander. ""And I did that, so I'm very happy.""
Lovander earned a career-best $49,187 this year as a non-exempt member of the LPGA Tour and was assured of non-exempt status for 2003 by virtue of her 113th-place finish on the money list, but her victory at LPGA International's Legends Course gives her exempt status for only the third time in her eight-year career. Lovander's 64 in the first round was a competitive course record on the Legends Course, bettering the previous mark of 66 (-6) set by Juli Inkster at the 2000 Arch Wireless Championship and tied by Nicole Dalkas at the 2001 LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
""Q-school is never easy,"" said Lovander, who has successfully advanced through the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament four times (1991-92, 1997-98), earning an exempt card for the 1992 season after finishing third. She was also an exempt member of the LPGA Tour in 2000 by virtue of her second-place finish on the Futures Tour money list. ""But it was a little easier this time because I was 113 on the money list, so it wasn't do or die for me. I just came out and gave it a shot and this is just about the best I could have ever hoped for.""
Mehra earned $30,001 in 2002 and finished 134th on the money list. The top-131 players received status for the 2003 season, so unlike Lovander, it was do-or-die for Mehra at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. Mehra's second-place finish assured her of exempt status, as well as the $5,000 paycheck, which may go towards her upcoming wedding to Christopher Guffin, Dec. 24-31, in New Delhi, India (Indian weddings last a week).
""You know, I don't come to q-school thinking that it's q-school,"" said Mehra, who has successfully advanced through the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament four previous times (1996-97, 2000-01), earning an exempt card three out of four times by finishing eighth, 14th and third in 1997, 2000 and 2001, respectively. ""I come here and play it like a regular event. I'm proud of myself. Next year looks great.""
Guilia Sergas, a non-exempt rookie in 2002, finished third at 278 (-10). Of the 25 rookies in 2003, Young Kim of Korea was the highest finisher, tying for fourth with LPGA veterans Anna Acker-Macosko and Annette DeLuca at 280 (-8).
The top 23 finishers earned exempt status for the 2002 LPGA Tour season. For the first time since 1994, there was no playoff to determine the final exempt spot, which went to Mitzi Edge, Young-A Yang (2003 rookie) and Carrie Summerhays, a 2003 rookie and daughter of Senior PGA Tour player Bruce Summerhays, all of whom tied for 21st at 287 (-1). In all, nine rookies earned exempt status: Young Kim (Korea); Soo-Yun Yang (Korea); Angela Jerman (United States); Georgina Simpson (Australia); Raquel Carriedo (Spain); Suzann Pettersen (Norway); Soo Young Kim (Korea); Young-A Yang (Korea); and Summerhays (United States). Two additional rookies are exempt by virtue of their finishes on the 2002 Futures Tour money list: Lorena Ochoa (Mexico); and Christina Kim (United States). Miram Nagl of Germany, a 2002 LPGA rookie, also earned exempt status for next season.
In addition to the 23 exempt spots, players finishing with a four-day total of 295 (+7) or better earned non-exempt status for 2003. Four players who lost their LPGA status in prior years will return to the Tour in 2003: Kelly Cap (T24); Lori Atsedes (T47); Lee Ann Walker-Cooper (T51), who competed on Tour as recently as 2001; and Liz Earley (T47), whose last year on Tour was 2000.
Nancy Harvey finished in sole possession of ninth place behind medallist Marilyn Lovander.
Angela Buzminski and Liz Earley received conditional cards that will allow them to compete in some of the LPGA events, but not all.
Resigned to the Futures Tour are seven other players: Isabelle Beisiegel, Heather Lee, Salimah Mussani, Lanie Cahill, A.J. Eathorne, Heather Wilbur and Tina Tombs.
