Mike Weir to be Inducted into Ontario Golf Hall of Fame on Wednesday, May 5th 2010

Uxbridge, ON -  2003 Masters champion and Bright's Grove, Ontario native Mike Weir will become the 55th inductee into the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 at Wooden Sticks Golf Club in Uxbridge.

The induction ceremony will mark the 10th anniversary of the Hall, which was founded in the year 2000 to celebrate the contributions Ontarians have made to the game of golf. Several notable former inductees will be in attendance, including Marlene Stewart Streit, Gary Cowan, Dick Grimm, Warren Sye, Stu Hamilton, Mary Ann Lapointe, Kelly Roberts, Kay Helleur, Irv Lightstone, Mary Jane Hall and Lorne Rubenstein.

The evening, hosted by CTV's Rod Black, will honour Weir's outstanding accomplishments while bringing together former inductees to celebrate golf in Ontario. Due to his Tour schedule, Weir will not be in attendance but will accept his award via video address. The evening will feature a multimedia presentation highlighting Weir's playing career thus far, as well as memorabilia courtesy of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. A contingent of Weir's family will be in attendance to accept in his honour.

About Mike Weir

After honing his skills as a young golfer at Huron Oaks Golf Club in Bright's Grove, Ontario, Mike Weir has catapulted to the forefront of professional golf in Canada with his impressive playing career. At age 16, he captured his first national title with a victory at the 1986 Canadian Juvenile Championship, and followed that up two years later with the Ontario Junior title. He continued to progress with his first Ontario Amateur crown in 1990, and earned a second provincial victory in 1992.

Weir, The Canadian Tour Rookie of the Year (1993), went on to win the BC Tel Pacific Open and the Canadian Masters (1997) as well as the 1998 PGA Tour Q-School. He clinched his first PGA Tour victory in 1999 and has since gone on to win seven more titles including the 2003 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. In that same year, he was awarded the Lou Marsh Memorial Trophy by Canadian journalists as the outstanding Canadian Athlete of the Year.

Weir's other accomplishments include representing the International Team at the President's Cup (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009) and representing Canada at three World Cups (2000-2003). In 2009, Weir was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and was also invested as a Member of the Order of Canada.

The Ontario Golf Hall of Fame was founded in the year 2000 by the Ontario Golf Association and the Ontario Ladies' Golf Association to help perpetuate the memory and acknowledge the contributions and accomplishments made by Ontarians to the game of golf.  Inductees in the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame  have made an extraordinary provincial, national or international contribution to the game of golf in Ontario in the form of golfing accomplishments, an illustrious golf-related career or some another exceptional contribution to the sport.

The Ontario Golf Hall of Fame is housed within the clubhouse at Wooden Sticks Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ontario, and currently has 54 members.
