Chris Baryla shot a bogey-free round of 61 to take the lead through two rounds of the PGA Tour Q-School final stage on Thursday.

While many at this week's final qualifying stage are facing pressure to secure their playing rights for next year, the Vernon, B.C. golfer has a medical exemption, meaning he has a certain number of events to win enough money to keep his card for the year. The reason he's at Q-School is to try and finish within the top 25, which would guarantee his 2011 playing rights without using the exemption.

So far, things are looking good for Baryla, who started the day tied for 65th but shot to the top of the leaderboard thanks to 11 birdies on the Crooked Cat course. That leaves him one shot clear of Ben Martin and two up on first round leader Kyle Stanley.

Matt McQuillan of Kingston, Ont., also moved up the leaderboard with a second round 67 to leave him tied for 10th. McQuillan started with four straight birdies and finished with five through his first nine holes to go out in 32. A couple of birdies on the back nine with one bogey left him at 5-under for the day.

Richard T. Lee of Vancouver came up with a second straight round of 71 but improved his position to a tie for 40th.

Matthew Richardson of Woodbridge, Ont., shot a 2-under 69 to move up into a tie for 53rd.

Jon Mills of Belleville, Ont., carded a 71 to move into a tie for 94th.

Ted Brown of Peterborough, Ont., had a disastrous day with eight bogeys including four in his final five holes for a seven shot swing and a second round 78 to drop him all the way down into a tie for 139th.

David McKenzie of Victoria had three bogeys for a 74, which sees him fall into a tie for 139th

The top 25 and ties after six rounds of Q-School will earn their PGA Tour card for 2011 while the next set of players up to 50 get full status on the Nationwide Tour.
