It's called the World Match Play Championship, but with no North Americans in the 12-man field, the title may be a misnomer.

In the absence of Tiger Woods, David Duval and David Toms, winners of three majors this year, the event looks more like the European Match Play Championship. Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ont., was the lone North American in the field but he pulled out Tuesday due to the air strikes in Afghanistan.

It's the first time in the 38-year history of the championship that no Americans are in the field. Duval, Toms and John Daly all turned down invitations in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks and subsequent U.S. military strikes on Afghanistan.

England's Lee Westwood said, "It would have been nice to see American players here this week, but I can understand them not wanting to fly as things are at the moment."
