Michelob Championship at Kingsmill

Kingsmill, Virginia - David Toms successfully defended the Michelob Championship in Williamsburg, Virginia for his 3rd PGA TOUR victory of 2001. David moves up to 3rd on the money list with $3,307,267 from the 25 events he has played this year and he moves up one place in the Official World Golf Ranking to No.8 - a 13 place improvement on where he started 2001.

Toms birdied four of his first seven holes Sunday, overcame a bogey in the middle and a late charge by Kirk Triplett to shoot a 3-under-par 68 and defend his tournament title by one shot. The victory tied Toms with Phil Mickelson and David Duval for second place in tour victories since 1999. Only Tiger Woods, with 22, has won more.

"It has been a good year and winning this week is extra special because of the way I played last week," Toms said. Last week, he missed the cut in Texas after playing two of his worst rounds of the year. "to come back the next week and be able to do this, it's obviously a bonus and it just shows that when I put my mind to it and really work hard, I can turn it around pretty quick," Toms said.

Mike Weir continued his strong play at the Michelob finishing in a tie for 12th at 7-under 277, Glen Hnatiuk of Selkirk, Man., finished at 2-under- 282 total and Ian Leggatt of Cambridge, Ont.,a 287 total.

The tournament was an important one for players trying to make it into the top 30 in prize money, thereby earning a spot in the lucrative Tour Championship, and for those hoping to finish in the top 125 on the list and retain their playing priviledges for next year.
