Mike Weir won in a four player sudden death playoff for his third victory on the PGA Tour. Weir was tied with five other golfers two shots back of leader Scott Verplank entering the final round of the Tour Championship.

Playing consistently throughout the week, Mike was in contention every step of the way. Sunday's final round 3-under par 68 left him tied at 14-under with Sergio Garcia, David Toms and Ernie Els.

On the first playoff hole both Weir and Toms split the fairway with their drives. Els and Garcia both drove the ball poorly, their efforts landed them in the trees right of the fairway. Els managed to play a miraculous shot to the green, 50' from the pin. Sergio was not so fortunate, as his shot struck the trees. David Toms was left with 125 yards to the pin, his wedge left him with a 30' putt for birdie. Mike was last to play after his 311 yard drive left him with 117 yards to the pin. Weir hit a pitching wedge to 5'. After the other players missed their putts, Mike knocked his putt in the center of the cup for $900,000 and a return trip to the winners only Mercedes Championship.
